Shepherd and His Herd
(political satire)
1915–1918, pencil, watercolour,
paper on cardboard, 38,3 x 31,5 cm
National Museum, Warsaw
Touch of pepper – touch of salt
Touch of pinching – touch of pain
Touch of sugar – cause its sweet
There will be food for my herd
Both the poem and the drawing with the individualised faces of the shepherd and the dog clearly indicate a political or social satire which was easily understood by the artist’s contemporaries. Stanisław Bohusz-Siestrzeńcewicz portrayed real adversaries for the enjoyment of the Vilnius social elite.
The line is not as dynamic and expressive as in the popular quill feather drawings. The background details are only lightly drawn. The most important role is played by the participants of the dispute and the rhyming commentary.
