The Portrait of Anna Minkiewicz

Portrait of Alexander Oskierka
1922, pencil, paper, 36 x 36 cm
Lithuenian National Museum of Art

Stanisław Bohusz-Siestrzeńcewicz painted a lot of female portraits. The male ones were significantly rarer. This image of Aleksander Oskierka is full of mystery. It was made long after the model’s death. The artist was then living in Poznań. What was the reason for painting this impressionistic and warm image of a respectable patriot?
The painter depicted the man in an equally minimalistic and subtle way as his female models. A very subtle line suggests the form rather than defines it. The clear spot on the background paper is just as important in building the shape. The minimal use of colourthe pale blue of the eyes and the fontage under the collaris the only strong accentuation of colour.
